Netflix picks up Season 2 of hit drama series Marcella

August 26, 2016

Cineflix Rights, the UK’s largest independent TV content distributor, confirmed today that Netflix has picked up the second season of critically acclaimed crime thriller Marcella, starring Anna Friel and written by internationally renowned screenwriter and novelist Hans Rosenfeldt. Produced by Buccaneer Media, the new 8 x 60’ series will premiere globally on Netflix (outside of the UK) in 2017 following its broadcast on ITV. Cineflix Rights, the sales and distribution division of Cineflix Media Inc., holds exclusive international distribution rights to Marcella and negotiated the worldwide streaming deal with Netflix.

Marcella is set in contemporary London and is boldly told with Rosenfeldt’s unflinchingly clear Nordic style. Co-created by Rosenfeldt and Nicola Larder (The Tunnel), Marcella was Rosenfeldt’s first drama created for an English speaking audience following his global success with The Bridge.

The first season of Marcella launched in April on ITV and was one of the highest rated scripted shows in the UK for 2016 with ratings of up to 8M, and a 29% share. The first season premiered globally on Netflix (outside of the UK) in July.

Chris Bonney, CEO Rights, Cineflix Media said: “We’re delighted that Netflix will be taking the second season of Marcella. Its global success is a testament to Tony Wood, his company Buccaneer Media and the exceptionally talented team who have produced one of the UK’s highest rating scripted hits of the year which is now gripping audiences all over the world.”
