Cineflix Rights Sells Secrets & Lies to Channel 5

Nov 28, 2013

Cineflix Rights, one of the UK’s leading independent television content distributors, has signed a deal with major UK network Channel 5 to acquire Australian scripted series Secrets & Lies .

Secrets & Lies revolves around an everyday family man, whose life is shattered when he is accused of murdering a four-year-old boy. As his world spins apart, he embarks on a relentless chase to clear his name.  At stake is his marriage, his kids, his reputation and his sanity.

The 6 x 60minute mini-series is written by acclaimed author Stephen M. Irwin and produced by the BAFTA and Emmy® Award-winning production company Hoodlum. The cast includes Martin Henderson (The Ring, Smokin’ Aces, Windtalkers), Anthony Hayes (Rabbit Proof Fence, Ned Kelly, The Slap), Diana Glenn and Adrienne Pickering.

The deal was brokered by Cineflix Senior VP, Programme Sales Sandra Piha and Senior VP, Acquisitions Noel Hedges. It was acquired by Channel 5’s Head of Acquisitions Katie Keenan. Secrets & Lies is due to air on the channel in 2014 following its premiere on Network Ten Australia.

Chris Bonney, CEO Rights, Cineflix Media said: “Secrets & Lies fits perfectly with the demand in the UK for high-quality, character-driven mini-series and we’re really pleased that Channel 5 will be making it a cornerstone of their schedules next year. We’re looking forward to announcing further international sales in the near future.”

Channel 5’s Head of Acquisitions, Katie Keenan said: “Channel 5 viewers love compelling, character led drama packed with twists and turns. Secrets & Lies ticks all these boxes. We’re thrilled to add it to our 2014 drama line-up.”

Tracey Robertson, CEO of Hoodlum said: "From the moment we started collaborating on Secrets & Lies, we knew that we had an incredible piece of television in our hands. This acquisition before the show has even launched in Australia, alongside the recent commissioning in the US, is testament to the quality of this production."

Rick Maier, Head of Drama Network Ten said: "This is a sensational early response and full credit to the cast and crew. The team at Hoodlum deserves all the success coming their way. We can't wait for Australian audiences to see this powerful new series."

Channel 5 launched as Britain's fifth terrestrial broadcaster in March 1997 and was bought by Northern & Shell in July 2010. It currently attracts well over 42 million viewers a month.

Aussie soaps Neighbours and Home & Away continue to delight. For sports fans Channel 5 is the terrestrial home of all England Cricket summer Internationals and regular world title boxing.

Channel 5 News sits alongside NewsTalk Live which debates the main topics of the day. They are committed to children’s programing with their award winning strand Milkshake!. Sister channels 5* and 5USA compliment Channel 5 with a mix of must see entertainment and US Drama.
