Buccaneer Media and Cineflix Rights strike deal for Marcella

Oct 02, 2015

Buccaneer Media, the London-headquartered production company created by British drama producer Tony Wood and Cineflix Rights, the UK’s largest independent TV content distributor, today announce a global distribution agreement for brand new multi stranded crime drama Marcella.

Co-created by Hans Rosenfeldt and Nicola Larder (The Tunnel), Marcella is Scandinavian noir set on the streets of London and Rosenfeldt’s first drama created for an English speaking audience following his global success with The Bridge.

The 8 x 60’ series captures Rosenfeldt’s genius in creating truly compelling female characters. Told in his unflinchingly clear Nordic style the series will lead the audience through an unpredictable narrative maze full of hooks and action, with suspicion falling on nearly all of the characters right up until its final moments.

ITV1 has commissioned the series in the UK. The agreement sees Cineflix Rights acquire the distribution rights for the rest of the world outside the UK.

Marcella was created by Hans Rosenfeldt and Nicola Larder and is executive-produced by Tony Wood at Buccaneer Media. The director is Charles Martin (New Worlds, Skins, The Returned) and Andrew Woodhead (Fortitude, Spooks, The Fixer) is producer and production begins in London in November 2015.

"I'm very pleased to be launching Marcella internationally. Buccaneer was set up to create drama for the international stage; our partnership with Cineflix Rights is a platform to bring creatives of different cultures together to forge top quality drama for the global market" said Tony Wood, CEO of Buccaneer Media.

Chris Bonney, CEO Rights, Cineflix Media added: “In Marcella, Tony has assembled a really exciting project made by an exceptionally talented creative team. We’re delighted to be distributing a show which feels bang up-to-the-minute and is exactly the type of strong character and narrative driven drama to fit into Cineflix Rights’ strategy for scripted content.”

Cineflix Rights is showcasing Marcella at MIPCOM 2015.

In addition to Marcella, Buccaneer Media is in production and development on a wide range of both scripted and unscripted programming including Desi Rascals for Sky One and a TV series based on the Sci-Fi movie Robot Overlords.
